Hands-On

Winston-Salem, NC (Dec. 3, 2018)  HandsOn NWNC joins millions across the country and around the world in celebrating the work of President George H.W. Bush, founder of Points of Light the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. As a member of the Points of Light Global Affiliate Network, HandsOn NWNC is proud to continue his legacy in our community, bringing to life his enduring belief in each individual’s ability to create meaningful change.

Since his first day in office, President Bush devoted special attention to individuals who stepped up to help solve society’s toughest challenges, and created the Daily Point of Light Award to lift up their stories and inspire others to act. To date, dozens of local Winston-Salem residents have received this honor, having been nominated by HandsOn NWNC. He ignited a spirit of volunteerism and, in the decades that followed, inspired millions to be points of light in communities across the globe.

“We are proud to have a role in this part of President’s Bush’s legacy,” says Amy Lytle, Executive Director of HandsOn NWNC. “While our work to connect volunteers and support nonprofits locally is meaningful and important, it is really just one piece of a global movement of service that was accelerated by the work of Points of Light. Since I personally serve on the network’s global Affiliate Assembly, I have a keen sense of how all of our local ‘lights’ of service play a role in making meaningful change in our world.”

“President George H.W. Bush was a kind, compassionate and humble man; a leader who believed in service for the betterment of society,” said Natalye Paquin, president and CEO, Points of Light. “As he aptly put it, ‘any definition of a successful life must include service to others.’ The call to serve your country and your fellow man – both of equal value – was a centerpiece of his presidency and his life. Today because of his work, Points of Light and its global network are an enduring part of his legacy.
