The Weatherspoon Art Museum first began collecting works of art in the 1940s. Since then, it has continued to enhance the quality and distinction of its collections through the acquisition of important works of art by gift, bequest, and even in times of economic challenges, by purchase. Besides caring for, preserving, and augmenting this outstanding collection, the Museum strives to make it readily accessible to the public. This summer, to fulfill that core mission, the Weatherspoon will feature recently acquired work by Nick Cave, Anne Chu, Helen Frankenthaler, Leon Kroll, Judy Pfaff, Edward Ruscha, Fred Tomaselli, and Jeff Whetstone, among many others.nnThe exhibition will highlight pieces acquired between 2009 and 2011 that have not yet been exhibited publicly. Comprised of sculpture, painting, works on paper, and photography, the assembly of work underscores the energy and diverse prongs of the Weatherspoon’s permanent collection, and in particular, the museum’s dedication to representing the art of its time. Also underscoring the exhibition is the spirit of adventure and risk taking that has long been a hallmark of the Weatherspoon Art Museum.

Close Relations and A Few Black Sheep: Sculpture from the Permanent Collection

Address:500 Tate Street, Greensboro

Event time:Tues, Wed, Fri: 10am-5pm; Thur:
Price: FREE!
Focusing on the Weatherspoon’s ever growing collection of three-dimensional works, this exhibition is presented in several sections, each of which brings together artists whose work shares an affinity, if not a fairly direct kinship. nn“The Space of Architecture” features work by Jackie Ferrara, Sol LeWitt, Robert Smithson, and Jane South, among others. Some pieces are structures that simulate architectural forms while others more directly quote from that vocabulary. The works in “Going Organic” share an inspiration from, or approximation of, the natural world and include newly acquired sculptures by Ursula Von Rydinsgvard and Roxy Paine. “No More Heavy Metal” presents the work of post-minimalist sculptors, such as Richard Nonas, Tara Donovan, and Charles Long, who reject the cool and pre-fabricated nature of much minimal art in favor of a greater engagement with form and materials.nnThe “few black sheep”—works by Scott Richter and Kent Young, for example—spotlight the fact that distinctions between genres and mediums have been stretched, dismantled, and elided in much contemporary art.
