Artists Po-Wen Liu, Joyce Teta and Benita VanWinkle bring you “refuge.” Po-Wen creates ceramic vessels that provide an interior space of spiritual refuge, Joyce explores the fabricated safety of story lines in ink and Benita shows us photographic stills indicating the silent refuge of movie theaters.

Seventeen graduate students in architecture at VA Tech took an intense look at Winston-Salem’s emerging downtown Theater District. They choose locations and developed individual designs they believe would enhance the area around the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts by adding entertainment, cultural and arts-based venues.

This year’s University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) Winter Dance concert aims to highlight the work of these masters while showcasing two world premiere works and an exciting collaboration with company-in-residence Hubbard Street 2 (HS2).

Heather Gordon, a Durham artist is recognized statewide and on a national level. She has exhibited at SECCA, the Weatherspoon, the Cameron Art museum and the Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY, where she was awarded an Honorable Mention by juror Nat Trotman, associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum of Art.

Formed in 2001, the legend of Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes is a noble tale of friends, funk and fortitude. It is the coagulation of classically trained musicians breaking the confines of the genre in a most likely musical haven; New Orleans.

The project has since grown from a chance side-project, formed in 2003, into what is now widely considered to be one of New Orleans’ most prestigious modern funk ensembles. An offspring with a direct lineage to their fathers in the Meters and the Neville Brothers, Dumpstaphunk is a recipe for creating a new standard for an entire genre.
