Unearthing the history of Terra Cotta

Over time Green Ford has expanded onto a significant portion of the land off of Wendover Avenue in Greensboro, but the Terra Cotta Heritage Foundation hopes to preserve the community’s legacy and land through a small museum on Norwalk Street.

The Southern exception

Southerners dominated the national political landscape at the time. Both the Democratic president and vice president hailed from below the Mason- Dixon. Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich was from Georgia. His counterpart in the Senate, Trent Lott, came from Mississippi.

Reducing poverty — King’s forgotten dream

It is true, as US Rep. John Lewis has said, that without King there would be no Obama. But let’s not make the mistake of reducing the breadth of King’s life work into the achievement of electing one man of African descent to the highest office in the land.

Getting to know Grave Digger

Megasaurus — a colossal car-eater by trade — can certainly breathe fire, but for whatever unknown, disappointing reason, opted not to torch the old clunker. It’s largest of the trucks at Monster Jam at the Greensboro Coliseum, and undoubtedly an important part of the show, but Grave Digger is the main attraction.

A heartfelt ‘thank you’

Many people have asked me why I decided to take on an internship as a 29-year-old (unpaid, by the way) when I already have a fulltime job that I don’t plan on leaving.

I love to hate New York

I really hate New York. It’s not because I grew up as a Red Sox fan and hating the Yankees was a way of life, or because of the Brooklyn hipsters, though both help.

How reading nonfiction helps build stronger thinking muscles

The pivotal moment in my writing career was in college, when my creative writing teacher reviewed one of my drafts and asked me, “How would you feel about moving your introductory paragraph onto page two, and begin with this anecdote?” I began...

Continuing the DIY legacy

Ishould have talked to her last week. We ran into each other at the Hand-to-Hand Market and joked that she applied her curating skills to the chip selection in front of her as she sold refreshments, and made plans to talk telephonically soon. I wanted to learn more about the process of creating the ______ horn,.

A seminar in hope for democratic engagement at Glenwood Coffee & Books

Appropriately enough, the program began with about a dozen people gathered in a circle at Glenwood Coffee & Books to hear Spoma Jovanovic, an associate professor at UNCG, read from and discuss her book Democracy, Dialogue, and Community Action: Truth and Reconciliation in Greensboro.

Around the water cooler

We don’t have a water cooler in our office — instead a lot of our shoptalk happens out front, when Brian tells one of us to come outside with him while he burns down a cigarette.

My final destination

I wanted to be an astronaut when I grew up. I remember going over to my best friend Zach’s house every weekend and lying in the grass in his backyard staring at the sky for hours. We looked for galaxies, planets, satellites, shooting stars and anything else that resembled extraterrestrial movement.

The capitalist mystique

Everyone seems to generally agree that times are tough. The economy is doubled over like it was punched in the stomach, and while some may speculate — and certainly both primary presidential candidates promised — that it will come back stronger than ever once it catches its breath, the truth of the matter is that the economy had a heart attack.

Two electoral realities in the Piedmont Triad

Seven people were seated on the bench inside the 14th Street Recreation Center in East Winston waiting to vote when the polls opened at 6:30 a.m. In 13 hours, when all 1,155 votes were in, all but five would be cast their ballots for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Goodbye, Time Warner

Ours was really a relationship of convenience, if you think about it. You were always there for me but we never had any sort of underlying passion, and I think we both saw this coming. Yes, things have gone pretty smoothly for two years now, but I don’t think you took me seriously over the last few tumultuous months.

Mom and me

By age 15 I found myself grounded all the time — and not for normal teenage things like bad grades or partying or sneaking out or smoking pot, but because I didn’t finish all the laundry, or I forgot to take out the garbage, or I was tired of doing all the grocery shopping for the family.

The science of snitching

People who are less versed in the criminal justice system are more likely to cooperate, he said, and police are more inclined to try and make an informant out of someone who doesn’t have as many resources, such as the ability to pay a private lawyer to fight a charge.

My life as a gang member

Law enforcement around the country has been picking up my fellow gang members on various charges, and to be honest, I’m surprised they haven’t caught me yet.

Daddy’s girl

It’s my 16th birthday and he hasn’t called me yet. All day I answer calls, talking to every other important person in my life, hoping that the next one will be from him. He’ll call. I’m sure of it. Before I go to bed, I check to make sure the ringer on my phone is turned up, just in case.

Lessons in neighborhood craft marketing

We set the alarm clock for 7:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, and managed to get out of bed by a quarter ’til. My wife and I carried the dining room table out to the sidewalk by 8. Our next-door neighbor was arranging some CDs on a table of his own, and the two of us concurred that it was earlier than our normal hours of activity.
