From 9-11, a decade of war and impoverishment

In September 2001, I wrote for La Lutta Dispatch: From the roofs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, stunned residents watched two planes crash into the World Trade Center, then a black cloud of smoke. Immediately, the television coverage went into full mobilization and the realization of an evolving wave of terror with massive casualties began to take hold. Office workers covered in ash fled across bridges into Brooklyn,

What does Labor Day mean?

Labor Day has always confused me. Dont get me wrong Ill always welcome a day off, but like many of our holidays, it feels like an empty, token gesture. If I had my way, wed appreciate labor every day of the year, and our parents, and Martin Luther King Jr.

Isners triumphant homecoming

John Isner stretched his remarkably long arms toward the blue sky above the Wake Forest Tennis Center in a gesture that expressed both triumph and gratitude after his three-set victory over Julien Benneteau of France during the singles championship of the inaugural Winston- Salem Open last Saturday.

Libyas moment of truth

The news of Libyan rebels peacefully taking control of Tripoli in crackling radio dispatches from the BBC on Sunday night came as a surreal moment of wonder. The regime of Moammar Gadhafi regime was collapsing.

Asking the wrong questions

Never let a good crisis go to waste. -unknown Rolling slowly through downtown on a recent Saturday night, it seemed like at least two police were posted on every corner I came to.

Hot politics at National Night Out

Climbing the stairs to the second floor of the Beloved Community Center last week I happened to mention to community organizer Wesley Morris that filing for Greensboro City Council candidates was scheduled to close on Aug. 12.

The best memories

Just recently, I forgot to extend congratulations to one of my good friends on her graduation day. As expected, her terse remarks and merciless criticism gladly met my belated wishes at the point of no return.

The Cedar Street neighborhood

I grew up on a cul-de-sac, running around with other kids in the neighborhood. We would cover ourselves in mud and then jump in the neighbors pool, play with Legos or Playmobil for hours and sneak through backyards climbing pine trees and building forts.

Redistricting as a high school clique psychodrama

For the third time this summer, the NC General Assembly redistricting committee held hearings at multiple sites across the state via satellite connection on Monday. GTCCs Jamestown campus was one of the locations, and it drew attendance from Greensboro, High Point, Kernersville and Winston-Salem.

A Joseph Campbell companion

On a recent Saturday morning, I awoke to find my life in disarray. The details are not important but suffice it to say the source of my angst and confusion remains one of the great mysteries of human life relationships between men and women. My head felt fuzzy.

My connection to NY gay marriage

When I heard that New York would become the sixth state to recognize gay marriages, the first thing I thought of was my uncles. Andy, my dads brother, and Michael have been together for more than 18 years the majority of my life.

Tap water that bursts into flame and other fun with fracking

We all know that government doesnt create jobs. We also know that job creation is every candidates highest priority. Particularly when jobs are scarce and homes at risk for foreclosure, the party in power ever looking towards the next election starts to get desperate.

Jewish slave traders, Civil War heroes, spies and foot doctors

When I think of the Civil War, I never think about Jewish people. Not until recently, at least. When I saw an announcement for a film screening of Jewish Soldiers in Blue and Gray, I knew I couldnt miss it.

Hal Sieber & the GSO color line

In those days, Hal held court at the Borders bookstore caf on High Point Road in Greensboro. The gathering was a salon where topics might range from literature to politics and religion, depending on the day or the makeup of the group. The Borders in Greensboro and its cafe is closed now a piece of history swept aside like so much of Hals world.

Something Special for the Ladies

The unforgiving sun bears down on Wake Forests BB&T Field. The mercury rising indicates the temperature in excess of 80 degrees just before noon as a wavy, desert-like haze can be seen off in the distance. Down on the field, war is being waged. Mary Childers stands with her feet staggered and knees bent in a ready stance.

Momento Miami

I was born on Miami Beach amidst an intense hurricane season, a gas shortage and a hostage crisis, and the beginning of the boom to South Florida. My memories of my birthplace are through the eyes of a child the bustling, suburban city compressed into bike trips to the pizza parlor to play Galaga, or orange slices after a soccer game.
