white noise

OUR INDUSTRY IN CRISIS

Sure, print journalism is dying — but hey, somebody’s got to read the 2,000page healthcare bill and muck through campaign finance reports. But a piece in The New York Times this week enunciates something I’ve been saying for years about another endangered facet of print journalism — the photog. Under the Times-ian hed “For Photographers, the Image of a Shrinking Path” comes the saga of the pros versus the amateurs in a fight that doesn’t often get the — ahem — exposure it’s due. From the nut graf: “Amateurs, happy to accept small checks for snapshots of children and sunsets, have increasing opportunities to make money on photos but are underpricing professional photographers and leaving them with limited career options.” Tough break for all you shooters out there competing against a grandma with a point-and-click.
