WINSTON-SALEM ART HOP - FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 2009
It is my pleasure to detail another amazing and artful April, here in the City of the Arts. Starting at 564 N. Trade St., you won’t want to miss a one-person show at Artworks Gallery entitled Ambiguities II, an Appropriated Image Installation by Anne Kesler Shields. This will mark the first time in four years that the artist will show one of her room-sized installations in Winston-Salem. The exhibit consists of 63 enlarged images borrowed from popular culture, current events and art history, combined in a collage that extends to cover three walls of the gallery.The work itself focuses on a large detail of 16th-century German painter Albrecht Aldhorfer’s “Battle of Issus,” which depicts thousands of mounted soldiers in combat. Crowd photos of people at Barack Obama’s inauguration and at the Haj at Mecca are juxtaposed with portraits of individuals of different races, nationalities, religions, occupations and attitudes. The intent is for the viewer to find visual and thematic threads among these disparate images, chosen as symbols of our beliefs, anxieties, despairs and hopes.
Moving just around the corner to 217 W. 6th St., Verdigris Gallery is showcasing the beautiful classical realist paintings of Louis Guidetti, a Winston-Salem native who left at age 19 to study art in Italy. Working in still life, portrait, landscape and religious figurative subjects, Guidetti brings forth each piece masterfully, in rich, living color that will inspire awe. Adding a jump outside the Arts District to your evening’s itinerary, I want to make you aware of an arts event happening this weekend only, opening First Friday as well. As part of Inside Out: Artists in the Community II, SECCA will present Berlin artist and architect Anna von Gwinner’s video installation “In Flight” in an unconventional venue. Being screened at Moore’s Self-Storage, 3935 Westpoint Boulevard, in an RV storage space, the installation showcases how the artist challenges perceptions of architecture and urban spaces and is the first of two works to be shown in different Winston-Salem locations as part of the series. The second piece will be screened in partnership with RiverRun Film Festival. provocative art is inspired by conspiracy theories, aliens and
science/technology/religion and their effects on the demise of true
creativity and humanity.

Gallery is featuring Louis Guidetti, a classical realist

• Artists on Liberty (521 N. Liberty St.): Opening reception for Does This Match Your Sofa, new acrylic paintings by Shayna Parker in
the building’s Main Gallery. Plus various member studios will be open
throughout the building during Gallery Hop from 7 to 10 p.m.
• DADA Community Center building (526 N. Liberty St.): Will be open for Gallery Hop.
