The city of High Point will soon draw working women from all over the world for two weeks every spring and fall.

Daunted by declining industry, rising crime rates and the attendant stresses on its police force, increasing joblessness and an overall grim economic outlook, High Point officials last week passed emergency legislation that legalized the world’s oldest profession — for four weeks out of the year.
