Wednesday through Thursday, Community Theatre of Greensboro continues Les Miserables School Edition at the Broach Theatre. Recounting the struggle against adversity in 19th century France, the story follows a petty thief who is released from his 19-year term and despite his parole becomes an adoptive father, as well as an honest mayor. But a relentless inspector makes his life miserable.
Twin City Stage begins its last show of its 77th season, A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to the Forum, on Friday. A farce brought from Broadway, the fast-paced, witty musical tells the story of a crafty slave tries to gain his freedom as a reward for helping his master win the hand of a beautiful, but slow-witted courtesan. (See feature to left) Saturday, the Playhouse Teens from the Children’s Theatre of Winston-Salem will perform in Community Day: A Shakespearean Pageant at Reynolda House Museum of American Arts. The event, from noon-3 p.m., will be filled with poetry, art-making stations, food and Elizabethan games, as well as performances by the Winston-Salem Festival Ballet. Admission is free.
Many local colleges are wrapping up their productions as the spring semester comes to a close, while some have already finished their line-up. UNCSA’s last act of entertainment will come from David Rambo, a playwright and screenwriter whose credits include TV series “NYC 22” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” when he speaks at the college’s Commencement Ceremony Sunday.
Triad Stage’s swingin’ musical Ain’t Misbehavin’: The “Fats” Waller Musical Show, presented in collaboration with NC A&T University’s jazz ensemble, continues through May 13. The show includes 30 beloved tunes of the Harlem-born prolific songwriter and musician.
Tickets are on sale now for Riverdance, the infamous Irish dance group, which will give a final performance May 24 at the War Memorial Auditorium. The group’s United States tour will forever close in June.
Next Thursday through Saturday, a one-woman musical will perform in Triad Stage’s Upstage Cabaret in honor of Mother’s Day. Lisa Dames stars in Victory Lane: One Woman’s Quest for the Checkered Flag, a “NASComedy” of a woman driver whose arrival screeches the NASCAR scene to a halt.
