DJ handle: Lankey
What it means: I use the name Lankey because, well, I’m tall and skinny.
Real Name: John Parkin
What I play: At home I play all genres of electronic dance music, but when I play shows I play a blend of dubstep and drum and bass.
Catch me at: I frequently play both Facebass (Orion’s in Greensboro) and Monday Mayhem (Brewski’s in Greensboro).
Upcoming shows: May 12 at Survival Saturday at Katmandu in Raleigh and June 16 at Facebass at Club Orion in Greensboro.
Got in the game: I got my first turntables in 2001 and I was a bedroom DJ for eight years. I never really intended on going to play shows, but a friend asked me to come play one night in October 2009. I was hooked. The moment that I looked up to see a room full of people dancing to my music, I never stopped.
Why I do it: I heard Sasha and Digweed’s Northern Exposure East Coast CD in 1999, and the way the music was mixed together blew me away. I had never heard anything like that before. Twelve years later, I still say that CD is the reason I’m a DJ.
Influences: Sasha, Steve Lawler, Dave Seaman, Dara, Dieselboy, Aphrodite, Nero, Datsik, Redstar, Mad Influence (For taking me under his wing when I almost quit), Rasputin (my partner in crime) and all the amazing local talent for pushing me to new levels.
First pro gig: The first time I was paid for a show was in October 2010 at Facebass.
Studio Work: I have no professional studio work. Anything I have recorded is done at a home studio and I am about nine months into teaching myself EDM production.
Favorite Technique: I can’t scratch; I hate effects. I like for the music to be as the producer intended it to sound. So I guess my favorite technique is my music selection.
Signature mix: “Second Chances” is my favorite mix I have done. I feel like that is when I found my own sound in dubstep.
Personal playlist: Outside of the club I still listen to EDM most of the time. But outside of EDM, I listen to Muse, Nirvana, Deftones, the Beatles, Tool and Radiohead.
Favorite Albums: Tool — Aenima, Sasha — Global Underground 013, Sublime — 40 oz. To Freedom, Radiohead — OK Computer, Nirvana — Nevermind
My gear: Technic 1200s, Pioneer 500 and Serato.

I’d like to add: I just want to say thank you to the people who have supported me throughout the years. I love what I do, and you people are my driving force. Much love. Oh, and support your local EDM scene.
