New grocery store coming to northeast Greensboro

Jim Kee, the District 2 representative on Greensboro City Council, announces that “one of the nation’s leading hard discount, limited assortment grocery chains” will be opening a store in the Bessemer Shopping Center. The city-owned shopping center on Phillips Avenue has been the focus of revitalization efforts in recent years. Last year, the city opened the new McGirt-Horton Branch Library in front of the shopping center.

The shopping center has been without an anchor tenant since Winn-Dixie closed in the late 1990s. Efforts by residents to revitalize the area following Winn-Dixie’s departure developed into a grassroots movement to close the White Street Landfill that eventually succeeded in 2006.

The city will host a press conference at the shopping center to reveal the new grocery store on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Kee came close to announcing the name of the new grocery store during his campaign kickoff last month, but refrained when he was unable to secure an agreement from a reporter to suppress the news.
