CAN WE PAY IT IN LINDEN DOLLARS?
Officials in Philadelphia last week decided that the bloggers of that city should be held to the same fiscal standards as other businesses inside city limits and wants them to buy business privilege licenses and pay taxes on any income they generate. Our initial response: Ha ha ha! Where is a blogger gonna get $300?
When we calmed down we recognized it as the affront to free speech that it is… unless, of course, said blogs accept financial compensation for advertising, in which case they are businesses. Just like newspapers! Perhaps this exposes the last frontier of the are-bloggersjournalists argument — namely that journalists pay taxes.
