Glen Campbell to cover U2, Velvet Underground & more

Dust off that old turntable and coax it back to life with a yearlong feeding courtesy of Sub Pop Records, reviving their legendary Sub Pop Singles Club this week. Out of commission since its original operation from 1988 to 1993 and its short-lived Volume 2 run from 1998 through 2002, the return to where all the sizzle began is in celebration of the label’s 20th anniversary.

Between the Buried and Me

By Heather MacIntyre
I remember listening to Counting Crows and wondering about the connection between a line from their song “Ghost Train” and a local progressive metal core band I remembered. Singer Tommy Rogers confirmed the connection, and admitted to the sweet and mellow tune of Crow’s lyrics naming their own project: Between the Buried and Me.

Cat’s Cradle show is a dance party. Is that a problem?

By Heather MacIntyre
I’ve just decided to designate the upcoming Cats Cradle (catscradle.com) show as a dance party on Friday, though it was probably inevitable that the boogie would break out at some point in the evening anyway, with indie-electro-fun groups like Matador’s Jaguar Love (www.takebacktheradworld.com) and Kill Rock Stars’ Shy Child (www.myspace.com/shychildmusic) on display.

Wilco fans delighted with band’s song list

By Heather MacIntyre
Some might say 7 p.m. is a little early for an evening weekend concert in the summer. The usual turnover for shows start around 9 or 10. Though I suppose we should declare a couple definitions for some of these terms. For a lot of live music enthusiasts, there lies a difference between a “show” and a “concert.” A show is held at a smaller venues with no more than 1,500 capacity (and that is pushing it) with very little security. Concerts are held at coliseums, amphitheatres or arenas, and hold thousands of attendees, employing almost a hundred or more workers for security, concession and every other need.

Be There!

By Jesse Kiser
The event is a Christian rock festival, although I do not think all the bands are Christian. The weekend features bands like, August Burns Red, Cool Hand Luke, Grits, the Chariot, the Urban Sophisticates, Versa Emerge and So Long Forgotten, just a few of the 30 bands on the slate.

When soul singers are kings

By Jordan Green
The musicians and female backup singers have taken positions onstage in statuesque postures as the crowd jostles at the Greene Street club on a recent Thursday morning, just after midnight. The comedian assigned to emcee the show is going a little long.

Nyos is now making the Triad home

By Heather MacIntyre
On their way to play a show in Wilmington, the band has been driving for a few hours before they hear a worried voice crack, “Uh… guys? Guys?!” Everyone turns their heads back to guitarist Dave Godwin who sits with an uneasy smirk and crooked halo above his head.

Taking a listen

By Heather MacIntyre
Anyone can appreciate the messages of the album track by track; there isn’t really a dull song that you press “skip” to get through once you’ve heard them all. The production of the album isn’t as rough and messy as most do-it-yourself records these days — and they didn’t have a label to distribute it all for them.

Music meets fashion, tribute to Tripp Joye, Pneurotics

By Heather MacIntyre
Any chance we get to let you know about evenings that encompass multiple forms of entertainment, we do. Some of the best ideas come from taking a music concert and adding in any other form of art. Friday happens to be one of those nights. Deep Cover Movement and iWish Entertainment.
