The NC General Assembly adopted a ban on smoking in public places, including bars and restaurants, by a vote of 62-56 on May 13. The law takes effect Jan. 2, 2010. The law allows also local governments to adopt smoking regulations that are more restrictive than state law.

Dell executives announced the computer manufacturer has cut 260 jobs at its Winston-Salem facility during a meeting of the citys finance committee on Monday. Dell vice president Frank Miller told committee members that the current global recession has led to the job cuts.

Crutchfield said the school system would use a portion of the federal funds to cover the budget shortfall this fiscal year. The school system also announced that it was cutting 25 staff positions, but Crutchfield said the administration was working diligently to find other jobs for those employees.

A measure that could eventually provide funding for light-rail service between Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point cleared its first hurdle April 22. The NC House passed House Bill 148 by a vote of 77-40. The bill would allow metropolitan counties to assess a half-cent sales tax for intermodal transportation needs.

The anti-tax group Americans for Prosperity holds a tea party rally at Center City Park in Greensboro at noon on Wednesday to protest tax increases proposed by Gov. Beverly Perdue. The taxpayer well is running dry, Americans for Prosperity state director Dallas Woodhouse said in a prepared statement.
