VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED (LionsGate Home Entertainment): One of World War IIs most depressing stories is dramatized in this engrossing, if imperfect, 1976 adaptation of the bestselling book, depicting the fateful voyage of the SS St. Louis in 1939.

In one of his best performances, Robert Mitchum plays the title role, that of a middleaged, low-level criminal desperate to avoid a third trip to prison. This puts him in a precarious position, having to deal with his fellow gangsters and also as an informant for the police, who want him to testify against them.

(Sony Pictures Home Entertainment): This Peter Bogdanovich twin bill includes the DVD debut of the directors 1976 comedy Nickelodeon (**), both in its t zheatrical form and a black-and-white directors cut. Upon its release, Nickelodeon was neither a hit or a flop, but was still the filmmakers last studio picture for quite some time.

A smoothly executed combination of speculation and fact, the story follows the circumstances surrounding the television interviews conducted in 1977 by British talk-show host David Frost (Michael Sheen) with former US President Richard Nixon (Frank Langella, who earned an Oscar nomination as best actor).

The film also introduced a new Scream Queen in Ashley Laurence, as the teenaged heroine Kirsty Cotton, whose father (Andrew Robinson) fell prey to the Cenobites in the first film thanks to his duplicitous and adulterous wife, Julia (Clare Higgins).

SLAUGHTER HIGH (LionsGate Home Entertainment): Of the many bad slasher films that proliferated during the 1980s, this British-made outing from 1986 may be the worst of them all but that doesnt prevent it from being an appallingly, ridiculously entertaining experience.

CADILLAC RECORDS (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment): Writer/director Darnell Martinaward-winning dramatization of the history of Chicagos legendary Chess Records never found the audience it deserved last year but is well worth a look and a listen especially for music mavens.

THE BOYS FROM BRAZIL (LionsGate Home Entertainment): Director Franklin J. Schaffners 1978 adaptation of Ira Levins best-seller, newly reissued on DVD, is irresistible highconcept filmmaking. Gregory Peck, in a rare villainous turn, plays the notorious Nazi scientist Dr. Josef Mengele, who has succeeded in cloning Adolf Hitler.
