Welcome to the YES! Weekly Pop Quiz, where we asked politicians and public servants
about their jobs. This week we address
questions to members of the Greensboro
City Council. The rules are simple: no research,
no callbacks.
QUESTIONS
What is the range of estimated costs given by Sutton-Kennerly and Associates for restoring the
tower and façade of War Memorial Stadium, demolishing the stadium section, and renovating the
interior area (any figure within the range is acceptable)? What amount is available through the 2/3 bond
financing for the stadium approved by city council in the winter of 2007?
What is the range of estimated costs given by the Field Operations Department for providing
solid waste collection for all apartments and single-family homes that don’t currently receive curbside
service (any figure within the range is acceptable)?
What service area does City Manager Mitchell Johnson identify as having the greatest capital
needs? What are some examples of needed projects in this service area?
Mayor Yvonne Johnson
1) Three to five million. One-point-five million,
and we probably have one-point-four
million left. [√]
2) It’s over a million. [√]
3) I can’t remember. I wasn’t there. I had to
leave early. [X]
Councilman Robbie Perkins, at-large
1) The Pop Quiz is stupid. Tell Clarey to get off
it. It’s only designed to make elected officials
look foolish. [X]
2) [X]
3) [X]
Councilman Zack Matheny, District 3
1) One and a half to five-eight. I think it’s $1.4 million. Even yesterday there was some talk back and forth
of whether it was $1.5 million or $1.4 million. I think Mitch came back and said it was $1.4 million. [√]
2) God, it was sixteen dollars a head. Or we do it with the three options. We gave one option of a million
and fifty-three thousand. The first option was $1.6 million. The middle option was $1.3 million. [√]
3) You’re talking about a ten-year plan. God, we talked for three hours yesterday. Building a lot of fire
stations. War Memorial Auditorium is back…. That got smoked [by voters in the Nov. 6 bond referendum].
It’s kind of unfair because we sent the finance committee back to the drawing board to see what we need. [X]
